Holidays with a difference - By: Andre Issey

It’s getting a bit chilly now we are hitting the winter months, the days are getting shorter and we may feel like we need some sun and warmth to look forward to. Christmas is fun, but after that we generally wish Summer time would hurry up! Many people start to plan their holidays at this time of year precisely for these reasons, and because it can work out cheaper to do so. Booking further in advance means better chance of getting what you want, and may make it a little cheaper. Booking closer to the time though can also be cost effective, those last minute offers and promotions can often be a bargain, and may take us somewhere we didn’t think we’d go!
So what kind of holiday do you take? There are so many options now for everyone, whether travelling as an individual, in a couple, with family or with friends. Gone are the days of only staying in a hotel or camping. Here are some options of what can be on offer to you:
1) Take a cruise - the image of a cruise can be one which is pretty stale. Many of us may think it is something that is expensive and only something which middle aged couples enjoy. However this is wrong, you can take a cruise to many exciting and different locations, with plenty to do on board as well as on the shore. You can cruise around the Mediterranean, the coast of Africa, the carribean, south east Asia, the possibilities are endless! They don’t have to be expensive either, you can often find promotion codes or special offers online for companies such as P&O crusies amongst others.
2) Volunteer – if you fancy venturing a bit further afield and going somewhere a bit different you could volunteer in a developing country such in Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa or Latin America....or anywhere in the world! Volunteer holidays can give a real eye opener in terms of getting to know a country and its people, you also feel like you are doing something worthwhile. This kind of holiday is definitely suited to those who are adventurous and are not so keen on just lying by the pool or beach.
3) Stay in an eco lodge or reserve - again this kind of holiday is mainly based further afield than Europe. Eco friendly resorts are becoming ever popular and give you a chance to experience some wildlife with a clear conscience.

If the above are not your cup of tea, and you prefer to have a holiday to just totally relax and unwind without any pressures you can usually find good package deals both in and outside of Europe. Various holiday providers often have good offers and discount vouchers, Thomson and Virgin Holidays are among those who make such offers. Whatever your preference in holiday style, enjoy your planning and have a lovely time when you go!
