Holidays on a shoe-string - By: Andre Issey

A summer get away to somewhere sunny, warm and new is something we all want to look forward to each year. Gong on holiday is one of life’s pleasures, and is one which we should all be entitled to. Unfortunately, since the recession has caused many economic and financial difficulties, many families and individuals have found it hard to raise the funds to go on holiday.

Some are opting for the “staycation” and are making the most of what the UK has to offer, going to coastal towns or areas of natural beauty such as the lake district or national parks like the Brecon Beacons in Wales. Doing this will cut out the cost of flying, which can be a big expense, especially for families.

But just because money is tight it does not mean we should stop ourselves going to our favourite destinations in Europe and beyond. Here are a few tips to make sure your holiday wherever you choose to go, is not financially impossible, and does not impede upon the rest of your finances.

1) Saving money across the year. If you put by a certain amount each month in a “holiday pot”, you can really save quite a lot of money. Spread over a year or so you’ll be surprised at how much you can out by each month without it affecting your monthly budget. So when you get back from one holiday, make sure you start saving for the next. It will give you something to look forward to too!
2) Looking out for hot offers and promotions with different tour operators. You can often find good last minute deals throughout the year from tour operators such as Thomson or Virgin Holidays. Promotion codes and offers from these kinds of holiday provider are often available on the internet, or in their high street offices.
3) Thinking of alternative holidays to what you normally take. Promotion codes such as those mentioned in my second point might take you on a whole new kind of experience. For example you might find promotions for P&O cruises or for holiday camps in France. Expanding your horizons means you may find more offers to take advantage of.
4) Don’t be tempted to overspend with money you don’t have and will have to repay later. Try not to take your credit card, as if you overspend on that you will have to repay it after, and this can cause unnecessary stress. Budgeting is key, and you’ll feel a sense of a achievement from it too!

So, going on holiday need not be an impossible expense. Take heed of some of the tips above and you should be able to take a break without it costing you the earth. Spreading the cost and taking advantage of offers and promotions from tour operators can make all the difference. Happy holidaying!
