Hockey was previously known as the ‘ball and stick’ game, played since
ancient times in places such as Rome, Egypt and South America. The
term ‘hockie’ was coined by the Irish, which has filtered its way
through to today’s generation. Field hockey has since evolved to
include ice hockey and roller hockey, both extremely popular sports.
Ice hockey became prevalent in the early nineteen hundreds in many
parts of Europe, including the United Kingdom. The National Hockey
League began back in 1917-1918 with a tumultuous start but has grown
over the years to become recognised worldwide.

Both roller hockey and ice hockey are popular sports, with ice hockey
enjoying a huge following all over the world. Special protective gear
is required as hockey is a contact sport and head injuries are
particularly common. All ages take part in hockey tournaments and
protective gear must be worn by all ages at all levels. Many of these
young players have high hopes and expectations of playing
professionally as young adults. The countries that experience really
cold winters, with lots of icy surfaces, are ideal places for
youngsters to practice their ice hockey tactics.

Whichever type of hockey is played, special ice skates are required.
For roller hockey you would need to purchase roller skates or inline
skates which can either be traditional quad skates or roller blades.
