History of wedding rings and engagement rings - By: Rutland

Wedding rings and engagement rings have a long history spanning centuries and cultures throughout time. The ring is obviously a complete and eternal circle with no beginning or end, going on and on forever and the perfect symbol to convey eternal commitment.

Folklore has it that there is a vein leading straight to the heart from the fourth finger on the left hand which may go some way to explain why both engagement rings and wedding rings tend to be worn on this finger in this country, leading the symbol of commitment direct to the romantic heart - the symbol of love. Though in truth, across the world, depending on the country and their customs, the wedding rings and engagement rings can be worn on different fingers whether that is the ring finger of the right hand or worn on the left hand prior to marriage and being transferred to the right hand after the ceremony. In some cultures, the rings may have been fashioned from hair, grass or plants and not necessarily from precious metals and gems. Either way - whichever hand it is worn on or whatever it is made from - the symbol of the ring however remains the same throughout.

It can therefore be seen that the exchanging of rings in a ceremony to seal the love between a man and a woman has been a tradition throughout the centuries. It just may not have been as full of the glamour of recent times without the beautiful stones and metals that are commonly given and exchanged today. Here at Marlows, we have a range of stunning engagement and wedding rings that will add glamour and sparkle to any proposal or ceremony and ensure that the marriage is sealed with the most beautiful piece of jewellery possible.
