History of the Internet - By: Tauqeer Hassan

Internet has changed the life of people and it has become an economical, cultural and life changing technological fact. It is a simple idea that evolved throughout the decades. While internet started recently, it will continue to revolutionize the world. Since its humble beginning, no one ever predicted it’s amazing growth through the last decades. Not only social businesses but the entire world has befitted from internet.

The 20th century was defined by communications which was characterized by television and radio broadcasters sending communication signals to TV and radios across the country and world. When the telephone became common in the world, this type of communication involved mostly two people but with the arrival of the internet, a new type of communications technology was available. This allowed thousands and millions of people to communicate.

The old fashioned technology of communication was not only limited but this technology hindered offering opinions and sharing. This is the major reason that the internet has grown fast. It has impacted the entire society whether it is in education, social circles or military, business. The idea of internet started much earlier back in the 1950s.

The early beginning of internet started with the launch of the Sputnik satellite by Soviet Union in 1957. America feared that the Soviet Union would militarize space and gain a huge advantage which could threaten its very security. In response to the Sputnik, America came up with ideas to protect itself against Soviet Union. One way was the creation of ARPA (Advanced Research Project Agency). Its mission was to create technologies that would help give our military a high tech edge lead in the arms race as well as protect our country and security. It is now known as DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).

The original internet was known as ARPANET. Its physical construction occurred in 1968. ARPANET was pretty much the first configuration of a network of computers and while in its very early stages, it was a huge springboard of innovation to the technologies used today. As the first internet, the ARPANET was in place in 1969. The internet started to build up steam and practicality during the 1970s.

The internet grew at a fast pace during the 1970s. One of the key innovations that helped grow the internet during this era is an application still considered to be the internet’s “killer app”. By 1972, the list of computers hooked into ARPANET totaled 23 host computers that made up the backbone of the network. 1972 was a banner year for the internet, the killer app that not only spread the use of the ARPANET but continued to fuel growth over the coming years and decades and Email was the application that changed the internet forever.

The internet continued to grow during the 1980s because during this time, computers became commonplace and were easily affordable for universities, businesses and individuals. As the internet took off, the technology and potential known as the internet was finally being fulfilled.

As the internet continued to take off during the 1990s, plenty of innovations spurred more and more growth. The modern dynamics in internet is the search engine called Google, social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter, blogs and many applications for internet use. The last several years saw incredible growth of internet and what the internet has for the next coming years can only grasp the mind.
