History of Livestock - By: Justin Davis

The practice of farming varies on the kind of livestock being raised. For some farmers, they have multiple types of animals as products. During 5000 BC and 4000 BC, herding was first skilled by people and through time, they have observed the life cycle of every animal. They have developed farming since then and still fully developed even today. Farming was limited to food and wool production before, and further the manufacturing and labor were also used. There are a lot of sufferings that farmers experience throughout. These include predation, virus, and epidemical outbreaks. But these problems, however, were resolved.

They used animal herding for transportation, labor, and games. Horses and camel alike were used mostly in their respective region in terms of transportation. In Africa and India, an elephant was used however it has been a deliberation if this animal can be considered as a livestock. For labor, it has been noted that Carabao, cow, and tamed bull was used to plot farm lots with the use of manual devices. They are also used for transportation, whichever is more suitable for the owner. Horses and dogs, for sports, are used for raising, animal wrestling, and many else among others. These are amusements which until now are practiced.

In further development, people are now raising fish and birds as livestock in their farm. Both are raised as food supply and for pleasure as pets. Tilapia and milk fish are the common fish taken care of even domestically. Some grow them in large scale for supplemental in the market and some raise a few for a personal provision. People have increased their thought about how to grow fish, which is better than those caught in the wild. Owners are able to supply enough nutrients and clean water for those fishes grown in farms. Birds on the other hand, it has been a practice even before, but it was limited to chicken, ostrich, turkey, and duck. Today, they grow birds for domestication.

The first problems that farmer encountered in farming history was predation. Because they were not able to supply enough housing for their livestock, wolves, fox, cats, and even rats attack their animals and are eaten. Therefore, appropriate custody was done. In the later years, animal suffered from certain disease, which was resolved by early vaccination of the animals. But even if that problem was fixed, it was countered by a global epidemic. A lot of farmers suffered all over the world, and a lot of industries were affected. Because of the scientific advancement we have, there are cures and precautionary measures made.

To help prevent the development of disease and other problems in these types of organic livestock environments they have to take other measures. For example they rotate the locations where the animals are able to graze. Then offer them a diet that is free from any types of additives. As a result they animals have a healthy immune system to fight off illness. Any animal that may seem ill is quarantined and inspected so that it can't spread any illness to the rest of the livestock.
Keeping the living conditions very clean is a huge part of this type of organic livestock raising. Without that being in place the risk of bacteria or disease developing would be too great. By making sure the basic needs of these animals are continually met the overall stress levels are reduced too. Many experts believe this can affect the quality of the meat and milk that they produce.
Everything from the care these animals get to how they live until it is time to slaughter them has to be carefully considered. There are stick guidelines in place and the goal is also to offer them a humane place to live while they are being grown for a source of food. The growth process though is one that takes place naturally instead of being speed up and enhanced by man made processed.
