History of Jaipur City - By: Suhaina Mazhar

Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan in India. The history of the Jaipur city starts with its foundation in the eighteenth century. Maharaja Jai Singh II was indeed the creator of Jaipur City. He was born on 3rd November 1688 and while his father Maharaja Bishan Singh died on 31st December 1699, he ascended the throne. When he became the Ruler, his age was only 11.. He was then known as Sawai Maharaja Jai Singh II, the title of Sawai given to him by the Mughal king Muhammad Shah. Sawai indicates one and one quarter which means a lot more than a single person. This specific name adorns all of his successors.

In ancient times, Jaipur City was a part of Matsya Kingdom. Kucchwaha Rajputs who were ruling over the place in twelfth century constructed the popular Amber Fort. The Kingdoms of Marwar and Mewar which contained Jodhpur and Udaipur had been areas of Jaipur during that time. Maharaja Jai Singh II belonged to the lineage of the Kucchwaha Rajputs. The name Jaipur was given by Maharaja Jai Singh The second. Amber was his capital initially. It was situated 11 kilometres from Jaipur City. Even so because of safety reasons and water shortage, he desired to build a new capital town. The Brahmin scholar of Bengal region known as Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya aided him to develop the city. Based on his designs, the building of Jaipur started in 1727.

The city of Jaipur had nine sections altogether. A couple of of these had been reserved for stately structures and royal palaces. The remaining seven sections were allocated to the open public. Enormous fortification walls had been built round the town having seven solid gates. The development of this city was in accordance with Shilpa Shashtra. The architect Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya referred the books of Ptolemy and Euclid and prepared his plans accordingly. The engineering was deemed as the excellent one, the finest in India during that time.

It required four years for finishing the entire structure of Jaipur. The instructions of the roadways were east to west and north to south. The door in the eastern side was named Sural Pol that means Gate of Sun, the entrance at its western side was named Chand Pol meaning Gate of Moon and then the gate at the northern part had been named Zorawar Singh Gate. After finishing the city, Jai Singh The second changed his capital city to Jaipur from Amber.

After the demise of Jai Singh The second in 1744, there had been battles for power among his sons. The kingdom didn't have able leader and was open up to invasions. Sawai Pratap Singh became the Maharaja of Jaipur in the year 1778. He was only 14 years old during the time. During his reign of twenty five years, he contributed for the improvement of this place. Simultaneously, he had to deal with constant threats from Mughals and Marathas. He was succeeded by Sawai Ram Singh II. He was in fact a serious follower of Vaishnavism. He had also been a social reformer and removed slavery, sati and child infanticide.

In 1853, Prince of Wales who later on became King Edward II went to Jaipur City. As a mark of greetings, the entire metropolis was painted in pink. This specific tradition of coloring in pink is maintained from that time and so the city ultimately came to be named Pink City. You can find out this through the Jaipur photos and Jaipur videos.
