Hiring The Right Interior Decorator - By: Art Gib

Deciding on how to decorate a new or existing home involves a lot of decision making, and sometimes stress. For some, this skill comes naturally, but for many other it does not. Hiring an interior decorator might be the solution you're looking for, but be careful with the choice you make so that you maximize your chances of being thrilled with the results.

-- Make sure you are hiring a licensed professional designer. Ask to see and review qualifications and call any references cited to see if the job was done to their satisfaction. It's your money and your home, so make sure you are dealing with someone who is who he or she claims to be.

-- It's important to be in the same budget ballpark as your designer. Some only deal in high end jobs, others are more flexible. Avoid later disappointment by stating your financial parameters up front. You'd hate to get excited about a designer's style and portfolio only to find out that she only handles a certain type of clientele.

-- What kind of time commitment is the designer willing to agree to? This can be a deal-breaking sticking point. A designer who is overloaded with work will probably not be able to accommodate your schedule. Is she willing to give you a start and an end date? How often will she want to meet with you to go over plans or to give updates on progress?

-- Does the designer work with a team or does she operate solo? You have every right to know who and how many people will be working in your house at any given time.

-- Be clear about your lifestyle and what kind of a feel you want in your house or room. Do you have children or pets? Ask the decorator what kind of fabrics she would recommend for well-loved homes. If she is not sensitive to your concerns, she is probably not the right choice for your job.

-- Not everyone is made for each other, and that's just fine. If you sense there might be personality conflicts between the two of you, keep interviewing other designers. You need to work with someone whom you can trust and rely on to do the best possible job in your home. You should never feel pressured to make an immediate commitment to hire anyone. Take your time.

Hiring an interior decorator can save you from making disastrous decisions about how your home looks. Decorators are experts who can really help you transform your house or room into just what you want. But remember that you are in charge, it's your money and time you are investing, so take the trouble to choose carefully.
