Immigration has become a hot button issue in the United States during the last ten years. If becoming an American citizen is your goal, there are legal channels that must be navigated; to accomplish your objective, it is wise to hire an attorney who specializes in matters of immigration.

Immigration law is complex, and most lay people have a hard time making sense of any of it. Besides its difficulty, the law is constantly changing: what was correct procedure just a few years ago may not be valid now. Because of the controversy surrounding illegal immigration in America, hiring a good attorney to help you is more important than ever. But where should you go? Whom should you turn to for the best help possible?

-- Do an internet search for "immigration lawyers" in your part of the country. If you live in New York, then you should be working with a firm which specializes in knowing how to help you stay in the New York area. Although these issues are federal, not local, you may still prefer to deal with someone who lives near you.

Visit three or four websites and see if any of the material displayed there is helpful to you. Make sure the attorneys you are considering are members of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). If they are not, they probably don't specialize in immigration law.

When interviewing, ask how much knowledge the lawyer has in your particular area of concern.

-- Finally, it is important that you feel comfortable with whomever you select in the end. If you have language issues, can your lawyer speak in your native tongue? Do you both have personality types which are compatible? You will feel more at ease trusting your future plans to someone whom you like and can depend upon.

Reaching your goal of living in the United States may seem like an unattainable dream, but it's not. Having a good, reputable attorney on your side can make all the difference.
