Hire A Life Coach, Get A Mentor Or Ask For Help! - By: Tim Brownson

It is traditional for people to reflect on their lives at the beginning of a new year. Literally tens of millions of people will have set new years resolutions and/or goals for the com,ing year and beyond. The sad part though is that over 90% of those new years resolutions will not last until the end of January, never mind to the end of the year.

There are a number of reasons for that, but as a Life Coach the two I see cropping up time and time again are that people don’t think through their goals properly and they rarely seek help either by hiring a professional Life Coach, engaging a knowledgeable mentor or simply asking family and friends to hold them accountable.

Unfortunately there seems to be a belief amongst many people (and my sense is that this is more prevalent in men than women) that asking for help is a sign of weakness. The reality of course if just the opposite. Asking for help shows strength and a willingness to accept that we don’t have all the answers.

Imagine a surgeon refusing to ask for an anesthesiologist, or a golf professional refusing to hire a coach, or even a successful businessperson thinking they can run every detail of every one of their businesses. When we look at it like that we can see that not asking for help is actually a sign of insecurity and/or being a control freak and not one of strength!

As a Professional Life Coach I’m obviously somewhat biased and think any person can benefit from Life Coaching. However, I’m also realistic enough to know that not everybody can afford the services of a Life Coach and sometimes alternative methods can help.

That is why I mentioned mentors. There are a lot of people out there that would love to share knowledge they have accrued over the years if only somebody were to ask them. No matter what it is you want to achieve in life there is a 99.9% probability that somebody has already done something, if not exactly the same, then very similar.

I regularly get calls or e-mails from other newly qualified Life Coaches seeking advice. Sometimes they want to hire me to show them how to build a Life Coaching practice, but often they just have one or two questions they would like help with.

Unless it’s going to take me a long time, rarely do I say no. I am a Life Coach because I love it and talking to somebody about something I love if I have the time is never a chore for me.

Whatever it is you do, or want to do to improve the quality of your life in 2012 there will be people that would welcome the opportunity to help you, if only you ask them Even if it’s only quitting smoking, ex-smokers will often want to give you advice. The same goes for drinking or weight loss. By asking somebody that has successfully achieved what you want to achieve, you are demonstrating respect and admiration. who doesn’t love being admired and respected?

Of course I still think you should hire a Life Coach, but then I would, wouldn’t I?
