Highland Village Dentistry Professional Talks about Dental Implants - By: Dr. Golab

HIGHLAND VILLAGE AND GRAPEVINE, TEXAS - You are very lucky to be living in the most technologically cutting-edge period of dentistry whereby dental providers can repair missing teeth easily and the results are visually satisfying.

More than 30 million people in the U.S. have no teeth in one or both jaws, according to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Tooth loss can be triggered by a number of things such as tooth decay, gum disease, root canal failure, extreme damage due to wear and tear, inherited flaws or mouth trauma caused by an accident.

No matter what the cause for missing teeth is, it can damage your long-term oral and medical health. Tooth loss can significantly lower a person's self-worth. The embarrassment people sense when they open their mouth can make them avoid social interaction and even decrease their quality of life.

"Missing teeth are capable of changing a person's facial presence," says Grapevine and Highland Village, TX dentistry professional Dr. Jonathan Golab. "It can make a person appear older. The vertical lines around the lips can deepen and the chin can protrude forward because they no longer rest around the teeth. This can make the face appear severe and aged."

Missing teeth not only affect emotional and physical well-being, but not substituting them can cause substantial harm to oral health.

Bite Problems
Each tooth cares for the ones next to it. When teeth go missing, it can change the way the jaw closes. Remaining teeth in the mouth may start to move and drift into the gaps, which can create complications for the opposite teeth. An opposing tooth can begin to hyper erupt and drift into the open space of the missing tooth, causing the jaw line to have bite problems. Moreover, food can also become stuck in the space, increasing the possibility of decay and gum disease.

Dissolving of Bone
Your jawbone needs the chewing action of teeth to stimulate it and retain its strength, or else it will begin to soften, Golab says. Once the tooth root is gone the bone cells in the area begin to die, which causes jaw decrease. The key problem of bone loss is that enduring teeth will ultimately become loose and fall out.

A tooth needs to be substituted as soon as it is missing to avoid bone loss, lessen movement of adjacent teeth and avoid extra decay. With improvements in technology, missing teeth can be changed with dental implants, which can give you back your self-confidence and your smile.

Dental implants substitute a lost tooth with a cautiously constructed tooth designed to function like your real tooth. Unlike dentures, crowns and bridges, implants are directly joined to your jawbone, which is the only treatment that inhibits bone loss.

"While there is a period of time that you have to go through for the implantation process to be complete, the final result is one that ends shame and gives you self-assurance when you smile," says Golab, a dentist in Grapevine.

The first phase is implantation of the essential support. A small titanium screw acts as the replacement for the natural root portion of the missing tooth, which is attached to the gums where the original root once was. It can take a few months for the transplant base to fuse with the bone as the gums have to become familiarized with the implant.

Once the base is united with the jaw, a screw-like device that projects out of the gum is attached to the implant. This abutment, as it is known, attaches the crown to the implant to let it restore the missing tooth.

"Dental implants are the closest you can get to natural teeth and it is likely that the implant will outlive you," says Golab, who also offers teeth bleaching.

The greatest benefit is that they preserve the jawbone, which makes it the standard of care in dentistry for replacing missing teeth. They are also highly resilient and will not effect the nearby teeth, thus conserving more natural tooth arrangement and improving oral health.

As with any, dental treatment the healing period is subject to the procedure and individual patient tolerances. For the implantation surgery, there is really no pain. After a three to four month healing period, the implant crown can then be fabricated and placed on your implant.

"We usually advise patients to be cautious when eating foods for at least a month and a half," says the tooth whitening professional. "We don't mean you only have to eat soft foods. A general rule of thumb is if you can cut it with a fork, you can eat it."
