FLOWER MOUND AND HIGHLAND VILLAGE, TEXAS – In part to advances in dental care, patients that have teeth that are fractured or cracked or that have large fillings that need to be replaced, but do not want to have their teeth ground into a peg for a crown, there are alternatives, such as inlays and onlays.

Inlays and onlays are often substituted for mercury fillings to treat tooth decay or similar structural destruction. Unlike fillings, which are done in one visit, inlays and onlays are created in lab before bonded directly to teeth.

Dental Inlays

Dental inlays are utilized when decay or damage occurs within the top rim or cusp of the tooth. They are also used when patients need to have metal fillings replaced due to damage or wear. This procedure is often completed in two appointments.

Decayed tissue and bacteria are removed from the damaged tooth before an impression is made. The surface is then reshaped and a temporary inlay is secured to the tooth. The impression is sent to a laboratory where a custom inlay is fabricated using the tooth's exact measurements.

During the second visit, the temporary inlay is removed and the custom inlay is bonded to the tooth with a specially formulated resin. The inlay is seamless and there is no down time from this procedure.

Dental Onlays

Dental onlays are used when there is more extensive damage caused by cavities and decay that extend beyond on or more cusps of the tooth. Two appointments are also required for this solution.

The tooth is prepped the same way it is for an inlay and an impression is also made and sent to the lab. Once the onlay has arrived, the temporary will be removed and the permanent will be bonded with a strong resin.

Onlays are a more conservative option as they help to preserve more tooth structure, unlike a crown where the tooth must be ground down into a peg. Inlays and onlays are both made out of a tooth-colored material, which allow them to blend in with the teeth around them.
