High heels in society and podiatry - By: David Jones

High heels are a vital part of every woman’s wardrobe, and most of us choose our shoes by the way they look and not by the effect they could have on our feet. Podiatrists know all too well what kind of ugly foot problems and pain this stylish type of footwear can cause. Some commonly known problems that can result are blisters, corns, calluses, aching feet, and even back pain. One suggestion made by Podiatrists is to make sure the shoe fits your foot properly, but this is not often considered when we are talking about fashion shoes. If the shoe doesn’t fit don’t wear it, if your foot slips in and out of the shoes when you walk it is too big, and if you have to curl your toes to get them in the shoe than they are too small no matter how good they look.

Society as a whole has excepted some amount of pain in and effort to look our best whether is waxing, under wire bras, tummy control pantyhose and of course high heel shoes. But some of the pain can be a sign of long term irreversible damage you are doing to your feet and body. Healthy has always been and will always be your best look.

The evolution of fashion has shown us many different types, sizes, and shapes of shoes we can put our feet into.

•The pointed toed variety cramps your toes into a V shape, that is unnatural however your feet do look smaller and very sexy!
•Spiked-heeled stilettos with a very thin heel that looks like it can’t hold your body weight without breaking are also very sexy but they dramatically increase you chances of falling.
•Platforms this is a style similar to walking with blocks tied to the bottom of your feet, they do made you taller but they can be hard to stay balanced on when walking.

Wearing high heels can have effects on feet in time, and one thing that both society and podiatry can agree on is there are some common sense things you can do to help you have healthy happy feet and still wear those glamorous heels.

•Keep your highest heels for special events and not everyday wearing
•Walk slowly and take small steps this will help reduce the strain on your feet
•Stretch and exercise your calf muscles
•Relax with a moisturizing foot massage

All you really have to do is make some good choices for instance pick the proper shoe for the activity and not for the look, for example:

You don’t want to go ballroom dancing in big heavy work boots, or go rock climbing in stilettos. Some common sense and good choices can make all the different and when you pamper yourself don’t forget your feet.
