High gloss is the new wood in kitchens - By: Rutland

The wooden farm house style kitchen has declined in popularity, the Shaker style painted or acrylic covered door is still hanging on but by far the most popular kitchens being sold currently are a mix of high gloss and matt doors. The new gloss doors are a far cry from the 1970’s gloss kitchens with stainless steel trim, the modern twist is to use them as an accent door, just like using an accent colour on one wall in decorating. The rest of the kitchen is then fitted with a toning door, generally with a matt finish and often in a wood effect.

The finished result can be spectacular, provided the right worktop is used. With the ultra modern look solid surface worktops are definitely right on trend. Corian is the first choice of many kitchen designers. From a designer’s perspective, the fact that Corian is so versatile makes it the perfect choice, sinks can be moulded in and the joints are seamless with nothing to detract the eye from the overall kitchen. Of course there are other man-made solid surfaces but as the majority of them have a gloss finish they simply do not work as well in an uber-chic kitchen as a Corian work surface which is practically none reflective. From the owners view point this has the added advantage of not constantly showing finger-marks.
