High Intensity Discharge headlights Revealed - By: Alexander Pardo

HID lights are a pretty new technology, particularly in the United States marketplace. They use a much more efficient light bulb than conventional vehicle lights. In this article I will talk about a short history of these vehicle lights and a few other interesting facts and misconceptions about them. I may also talk about some of the benefits of using HID lights.

HID or High Intensity Discharge auto lights were first used by BMW in 1991 in their BMW 7 series. HID headlights quickly became the most desriable lights utilized in European and Japanese automobiles but this transition has been much slower in the United States. In 1996, Lincoln was the pioneering US auto maker to use HID automotive lights which they used in their Lincoln Mark VIII automobiles.

So what precisely is HID light? HID light bulbs use arc lamp technology. Arc lamp technology utilizes high voltage electricity (up to 15,000 volts!) to create an arc between 2 electrodes in a gas (Xenon) substrate housed in the light light bulb. This technology has been used for many years in industrial light applications. In contrast, conventional automotive lights pass electrical energy through a thin tungsten wire filament.

There are some everyday misconceptions connected with HID lighting and vehicle lights. Numerous people believe that the higher the color temperature (indicated by ‘K’ or known as the Kelvin Temperature Chart), the brighter the bulb. However, this isn't true. XD7, a HID headlight manufacturer, is renowned for its range in color temperatures. Their range goes from 4000K all the way up to 12000K. As you will see, the temperature doesn't affect the brightness. Rather the color is what is affected by the temperature.

For Instance, XD7 suggests that you go with a 6000K HID headlight if you want a natural looking light. Otherwise, if you want white with hints of yellow, then you’ll need the 5000K HID auto light or if you want white with touches of blue, you’ll want the 8000K HID headlight. In addition to yellow and blue you can get white with tinges of green with the 10000K HID automotive headlight or a bluish purple light with the 12000K HID headlight.

In addition to the misconceptions about the color of the lights, some people believe that HID headlights are not as durable as conventional lights. However, this is untrue. In reality, HID headlights are often much more resilient and can be used for off-road purposes unlike numerous filament headlights.

There are a few benefits to utilizing HID headlights over conventional lights. First off, HID car lights can oftentimes last up to 10 times longer than traditional headlights. Also, as I previously mentioned HID headlights are often times more tough than filament lights.

However, probably the most important thing for many people is the length you are able to see with HID headlights. This improvement in sight is oftentimes rather significant and could be the reason a potential auto accident is averted. Once you use HID automotive lights you will not ever want to utilize conventional lights ever again.
