Here's A Good Reason To Get A Gas Powered Generator - By: dctgibson

Before April 27th, 2011, I never gave gas powered portable generators any significant thought. Why should I? After all, I live in Alabama and we do have some really serious storms at times. We have even had some snowstorms that were pretty bad. Even as a child living in Oklahoma, I can remember some hellacious storms, some of which spawned tornadoes, but we did not have any power outages. From severe thunderstorms to lightning storms to hail storms to snowstorms to winds storms, I have seen it all. All of which have knocked the power out at some point or another. Through all of that, we've gone without power for as long as one full day……but that was before April 27th, 2011. That day will be known as one of the most severe tornadic outbreaks in US history.

We got dire alerts days before proclaiming that there seemed to be an extreme chance of long track, dangerous tornadoes for our area (northern Alabama). I checked to ensure we had our emergency kit filled and ready - not thinking of the necessity for a gas powered portable generator and that would come back to haunt me and my loved ones. The night before, I told my significant other that our kids may not be going to school that day and I would be leaving work around 1p.m.. Our alarm went off at 5:50a.m. the next morning and I was off to the shower as usual. We could hear it rain “cats and dogs” outside along with some rather strong winds. Nothing, though, to suggest that there was a tornado nearby. Immediately, the tornado siren sounds…..that was the first of twenty-two tornado warnings for our town. That morning my family saw a funnel cloud over the field next to us. Later that morning, I saw a funnel cloud across the street from my office. That evening, my family and I saw a rapid moving funnel cloud passing above us. But, later that evening, the Athens tornado struck hitting the Browns Ferry electric plant and there went the electricity for our city. We figured the electricity would be back on in a day, because that's what normally happens, right? Why think otherwise…one day went by. We had to make some changes as a result of electricity being out, but hey, we thought it would be for only one day. Day two and still no electricity. Starting to get a little troublesome without it….the refrigerator is out, no lights, ATMs not working, street lights out, no internet, no TV, no power for our netbooks, can’t charge the phones inside, running water is cold. Things just weren't too fun during those days. We discovered that the electricity would be out for up to 1 week. Wow!!! Totally not prepared for that. Thanks goodness we all remained calm and cool through such a trying time period. I remember going to Home Depot only to discover that every one of their portable generators were out of stock (this after they were able to make arrangements for their customers to pay cash). One neighbor across the street had a gas powered portable generator which kept his home bright and lit at night. His house was just like a star shining in a dark sky.

It is incredible the way we think traumatic things usually happen to other people. In this case, it did, but we were included as well. Anyways, after that difficult period, I chose to get a gas powered portable generator at once. Some basic research led me to the ETQ TG32P12 gas powered portable generator. I’m comforted by the fact that it’s pushing 3250 watts, carries a 7HP engine, will give me 13hrs. of run time (excellent), and isn’t too loud at 65db. I tested it once during the day to just get a look of what it can do and it performed well. I tried it with 4 100 watt lights, my laptop connected, big screen television on, the refrigerator running, and the generator made its typical lawn mower-like sound, although not as loud as our neighbors generator. It kept these things I had using electricity running normally. Now it did take a little time to get things setup, but it was not a difficult process- about 20 minutes or so. All in all, I do believe this gas powered portable generator will come in handy if we have to experience any stormy weather like those of April 27th. Let's hope and pray we don’t, however, you never know.
