What are hemroids? Also referred to as piles, they are bulging or dilated veins in the anus and rectum, occasioned by pressure increase in the veins in the rectum. Of all Americans, 50-75% develops this infection.

But, what exactly are hemroids?
Hemroids attack the blood vessels lining the anus. Strain on rectal walls makes the muscles supporting these vessels weak. They, as a result, lose their hold and become large resulting to internal hemroids, which are protrusions that is sac-like in the canal of the rectum, or external hemroids, which are located underneath the skin surrounding the anus.
Internal Treatment

For the treatment of those not responsive to self-care measures, one of 5 techniques is generally used:

1. The Rubber Band Ligation
The rubber band litigation technique entails putting a tiny rubber band at the bottom of the internal hemroid. This band distracts the supply of blood to the piles, making them wither and drop in 4 days or in a week time.

2. Injection Sclerotherapy
This kind of approach entails the injection of a chemical solution in the mucous membrane close to the infection. The chemical solution ignites inflammation and closing of the veins, thus reducing the disease.

3. The Infrared Photocoagulation
This technique involves directing of infrared light to clot the pile veins that have been dilated. This process enables the pile to shrink because the blood does not anymore flow through the blood vessels that have clot.

4. Laser Coagulation
Laser coagulation is a new technique that involves applying an electric current to the hemroids. This current, radiated by the electrode probe, causes a chemical process that stops blood flow to the infected areas, thus, lessening the inflamed tissue.

5. Hemorrhoidectomy
This is a surgical technique that involves the removal of the hemroid groups in the canal of the anus. This process is performed using a laser, a cautery device or a scalpel.

External Treatment

Any of these three techniques may be used:

1. Hemorrhoidectomy
2. Infrared Photocoagulation
3. Laser Coagulation
