Helping Searches Find Your Site - By: Cammy Cristo

As a web designer, one of the most common questions I hear from business owners is this: How can I increase my ranking in Google? Search engine optimization (SEO) is this process of making a web site easy to find in search engines, using key words and phrases likely to be used by those in the site’s target audience. Indeed, SEO should be a large part of any modern web site project. Unfortunately, many people are of the mindset that “if you build it, they will come.” Because of that, SEO is left by the wayside and clients don’t really understand its importance until they realize no more is visiting their site.
It’s your job, as web professional, to educate clients about the importance of SEO Phoenix . If a site is built with SEO in mind from the beginning, it will be easier to increase the site’s presence in the major search engines.

How Search Engines Work
Traditional search engines rank pages according to the number of times a key word or search term appears on the page. In the past, this has caused some less-than-honorable people to repeat key words over and over in an effort to increase their ranking. The search engines caught on to that little practice, however, and started banning sites that repeated key words in an unreasonable manner.
Google, the most popular search engine, takes slightly different approach. According to Google’ web site, their process works like this:

We use more than 200 signals, including our patented Page Rank algorithm, to examine the entire link structure of the Professional web design Development and determine which pages are most important. We then conduct hypertext-matching analysis to determine which pages are relevant to the specific search being conducted. By combining overall importance and query-specific relevance, we’re able to put the most relevant and reliable results first.

In essence, Google examines not just the page, but the whole web site, to evaluate the relationships between the pages and therefore the importance of the content within them. This means a key word used in a headline could indicate that it is of grater importance than a key word used only within the body copy.
Google is often referred to as a “crawler-based” search engine, because its systems “crawl” or “spider” the web to find relevant data. By contrast, some search engines are directory based and merely provide and index of sites, but they don’t necessarily seek out related data. Each search engine has its own way of indexing data, in an effort to increase speed and efficiency.

Search Engines Look For Keywords
When someone starts a web search, the popular search engines evaluate keywords and phrases found throughout your pages to fid the best matches. Of course, content is king, so the best way to get your site found by the search engines is to include relevant content. But it is also important to repeat your site’s keywords in specific places.
