Helpful Tips For A Speedy Breast Enhancement Surgery Recovery - By: Allyson Quesada

Whether your breast augmentation surgery took place in a hospital or surgery center, you will more than likely be able to go home the same day you have the procedure. In some cases the doctor may have you stay overnight if they foresee any possible complications.

You may also request to stay overnight if you do not have someone to care for you at home your first night back, as care is highly important your first 24 to 48 hours after surgery.

When you wake up from surgery you will be in a recovery room and be wearing a special bra or bandage that is worn to put pressure on the breast and aid in recovery. This also helps support the new weight of your breasts and decrease chance of bleeding or shifting.

You will probably be given an ice pack and prescription pain medication to help deal with swelling and pain, the most common side effects of the surgery. Once home you can also take acetaminophen or ibuprophen and apply ice wrapped in a towel to the breast area. While it might seem like a good idea, it is not recommended to massage or move the implants until the doctor says it is ok.

When you get home you will need to be sure that both you and your care giver are watching for signs of infection which can include fever and chills, persistent high temperature, excessive redness, swelling and increasing pain. There might also be excessive bleeding or discharge at the incision or blood or fluids accumulating in the breast. If these symptoms go on for more than two days after your discharge you should call your doctor. You should also call your doctor if your pain and/or nausea cannot be controlled by medications.

Other symptoms you might experience include implants that feel hard, leakage, deflation, chest pain, swelling of the feet and/or calves and legs, pain in the joints, extreme fatigue, stiffness in the arms or an unexplained rash.

There is no doubt you’ll want to shower as soon as you get home from your operation, but your surgeon will probably ask that you wait between three and seven days following surgery to do so. Be sure to be careful around your stitches as well as any catheters or drains, all of which will be removed about a week after your surgery. To help prevent infection and speed the recovery process, you’ll want to be sure you, or your caregiver, regularly clean the wound in the manner your surgeon recommended. This usually involves regularly changing the dressing and cleaning the wound with a type of antiseptic.

Be sure to eat regular meals high in protein, fruits and vegetables as this can help speed up your recovery and keep your stomach full enough to take your pain medications without causing an upset stomach. Also make sure you try to get up and move around a little each day for the first two days following your surgery. This helps boost blood flow which helps speed up the healing process.

Your surgeon may ask that you wear postoperative bra or compression bandage while you recovery to help with added support. Sometimes they will recommend simply wearing a sports or jogging bra. In most cases you can return to work after a week or two at the most. If you’re job involves high levels of activity, lifting and/or a full range of motion you may have to do light duty or stay out for an additional week.

You will need to limit strenuous exercise, including sex, or any other activity that increases your blood pressure. Stress and anxiety, while often seen in patients recovering from breast augmentation surgery, should be limited and controlled as much as possible. Try meditation, reading, calming music and aromatherapy to help your overall well-being as you recover.
