Help is available to solve your computer woes! - By: Felicity Lightbody

Are you having problems with your desktop computer or laptop? Don't worry; most problems can be easily sorted out. First, check your computer guide for any advice. Read the manual and the Frequently Answered Questions section in particular.

Of course, there are many precautions that can be taken to prevent future problems. For example, anti-virus programs will prevent your computer from getting a virus. There are plenty of free anti-virus programs out there, but sometimes they, too, can have viruses. Subscribing with a well known company is recommended. Perform virus checks regularly - every one or two weeks preferably. Also, remember that many viruses sneak their way in the form of free downloads. Next time you download something for free, ask yourself these questions: Can I trust this website? Is it worth it to risk a virus just to download this?

On-line repair programs offer convenient and rapid solutions to diagnose and repair your computer's problems. Remember though, only trust these programs if the service is verified as credible and secure. Sometimes it's easier to choose the free software; but, as mentioned previously, the on-line programs might contain viruses and threaten your computer with even more issues. Think carefully - you might choose the free path now, but when you have to eventually hire a repair person, or even buy a new computer, the costs can be much higher than paying for a legitimate service in the first place. Look carefully for the program that is designed to address your specific needs and preferences. Read the instructions and, more importantly, read the other customers' reviews. You don't want to choose a program that doesn't perform to expectation or is too confusing to use. Also, it's important to differentiate purposes of the on-line repair programs. Some programs simply only rid the computer of the viruses. Although it is important to make sure the viruses are removed to prevent further issue, it is better to find a system that removes and repairs any damage the virus may have caused.

Using firewalls is another preventative measure. Firewalls help to prevent others from accessing your system and personal files. However, firewalls can cause issues with wireless signal function. Your firewall needs to be set on a mode to allow browsing on port 80. Also, if you need other capabilities, such as SMTP, test the firewall first. Disable it; check if the problem is solved; and, if it is solved, find a new firewall. If the problem persists, enable the firewall and look for another solution to manage the other required capabilities.

If you still have problems, then you will need to secure the services of an expert and contact a computer repairman. If you know of any local businesses that provide IT services, call them. Otherwise, search the internet for a computer repair person who lives near you. Check your phone directory. There really is more help available than you might realize.

Good luck; just remember that protecting your computer and maintaining it regularly is the best solution.
