Help I Have Scabies: What Can I do to Stop the Contagious Mites - By: Rosie Wallace

Scabies are real and not a science fiction entity. They are little mites that lay eggs under the skin. It is the allergic response that creates the rash redness and itching. Something foreign is in the body and it is reacting. Though you can get scabies through sexual contact, it isn't restricted to this. For instance, they can be spread in nursing homes and at schools due to the hand contact, sharing clothing and other close contact.

Because the rash can look like mosquito bites, chicken pox and allergic contact dermatitis, it may be hard to figure out initially the root cause. Also this rash may not appear for several weeks so sometimes we try to think a day or two back rather than to look back a month ago at our contacts and activities. Remember that scabies are invisible so they can't be seen.

Often the little red pimples will appear in the places between the fingers, around the wrists and in the trunk area. The itching keeps people up at night and it's good to be careful about scratching it because the skin is inflamed and it can result in bacterial infections.

Doctors will prescribe generally a 5 percent elimite pesticide lotion to apply. When you do this, also have others in household do the same to prevent it from going back and forth. Washing the clothing and linen in a very hot wash and drying on heat that is high is also critical. Bag kids' stuffed animals for a week or so. Scabies cannot live off a person for more than a few days. It can be helpful to put a vinyl mattress cover on your bed to prevent reinfestation.

The traditional treatment is the 5 percent pesticide cream of permethrin in the US. The lice products are one percent and not effective on scabies mites. In India neem and turmeric are used and it's interesting because neem oil is a contaceptive. Staying calm is important as it's easy to get very anxious. Know that these can be eradicated and your life will get back to normal.
