Hello Googlephone! - By: David Martinez

At a press conference in New York yesterday, T-Mobile made the much anticipated announcement regarding the launch of the first Android powered mobile phone, the T-Mobile G1. For those not in the know, the G1 or ‘Googlephone’ is built by HTC and is the first phone on the market using the open source mobile platform named Android.

Android is a product of the Open Handset Alliance, a group of more than 30 technology and mobile companies dedicated to bringing the consumer a richer, cheaper and better mobile experience. The alliance includes manufacturing giants such as Motorola, LG and Samsung so it is likely that the G1by HTC is just the first Googlephone of many. By having so many manufacturing companies on board it means that users should have a consistent experience when accessing mobile internet services and Google will be able to push forward in their mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.

T-Mobile is already a market leader in the mobile Internet with innovative packages such as Web n’ Walk, the only Network not to charge extra for not exceeding the fair use policy. Christopher Schlaffer, Group Product and Innovation Office at Deutsche Telekom described the launch of the G1 as a milestone in bringing the open mobile Internet to the mass market. With the shared experience and expertise of over 30 companies from the Open Handset Alliance, it certainly seems like this launch will be a massive step toward it.

The G1 is expected to help drive mobile internet forward by allowing the developer to create useful applications which maximise hardware performance and enhance user experience by taking a standards based approach to development.

It will be interesting to see the impact the T-mobile G1 has on the mobile market compared to the Apple iPhone, which is the G1’s main rival. The two have a very similar interface, both being very user friendly and easy to use. The main difference with the G1 is the fact the it is ‘open’ so 3rd party companies can develop custom applications so do whatever you need and be able to leverage the power of current Google products, the sky is the limit!
