Heat Wave Hits Hard - By: Dr Bill

I'm in New York this week, and whoa boy, it's as hot as I can
remember and that's a lot of Long Island summers. Yesterday, I was
in Manhattan and I felt like I needed some ice cream every other
block (I settled for water).

In spite of the heat, which on the streets was over 100, if it was
a degree (it actually hit 103 in Central Park--a record!), there
were a lot of people exercising. They were stripped down to look
like the Naked Cowboy (not really), but there were a lot of micro
running shorts, which look much better on women than men. Most of
the men were shirtless too, but sadly, none of the women.

The heat wave isn't confined to New York. Record temperatures are
being hit, up and down the east coast and in other parts of the
country. Air quality warnings are being sounded on the news and
people are being told to stay inside. That may work if you happen to
be 95, which most of us aren't. Most of us are going to be out and
about, in spite of the Al Gore induced heat and the Obama related
air quality. (Don't worry, just give up more of your money and he'll
solve all the environmental problems of the world...just like that
pesky oil well in the Gulf of Mexico.)

If you're paying attention, you'll have noticed another Obama
"transparency." The Obama administration has made it a crime to be
within 65 feet of any environmentally affected area. You can
actually be fined up to $40,000 for taking pictures of what is
actually going on there. (Which isn't much...and that's the point.)

Back to the heat.

If you're in fine shape, it's okay to exercise in the heat, provided
you are completely hydrated and carrying water with you, to replace
what you're losing. That may be more water than you think and with
heat like yesterday and today, one of those small water bottles
won't do.

If you're not in optimum shape, I would recommend moving inside. You
can walk in a shopping mall, or a large government building. The
second option is a joke, because the biggest whales on earth work
for the government. (Federal, state, city, it doesn't matter...you
want a gaggle of buffet molesters, just head to the nearest
government building.)

Your other real option is to get up very early, before the heat
hits, or wait until later in the day, when the temperature has
dropped a bit. When I'm in Florida, I like going out at around 9 PM,
after the sun has completely disappeared (with OFF! insect
repellent, so I don't lose a quart of blood to the skeeters).

Whatever time you're going out, keep the fluids coming. Don't wait
until you feel thirsty, just keep taking on water, every fifteen
minutes or so. This is important, even if you're just sitting around
the pool, or beach, working on your tan. Most of the time, your body
will be losing more water than it's taking in.

And never think that you'll lose more weight by working out in the
heat. It's true that you can lose a lot of water, but not fat. That
comes off when you follow all the other rules, like eating the right
things, getting enough sleep and taking the proper supplements, like
pharmaceutical grade fish oil, which should be the cornerstone of your
personal health plan.
