Heartburn During Pregnancy - By: altruist

Heartburn during pregnancy is common complaint with expectant females. Most pregnant women experience heartburn at some point during the nine months they are pregnant. Some women are affected more severely by heartburn during pregnancy than others. There are some things you can do to lessen this problem and the frequency in which it occurs.

The starting point is "acid reflux". This occurs when stomach acid returns from the stomach into the esophagus. The esophagus is simply a "tube" through which food is transported down your throat into your stomach.

Often there is a burning sensation associated with the reflux, and this is heartburn. The burning occurs because the esophagus gets irritated by the acid. Going one step further, chronic heartburn, occurring two to three times per week, is referred to as GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Heartburn during pregnancy becomes especially bad in the third trimester, when the baby is getting larger and larger, and pressing harder on your stomach. If you are really experiencing constant or chronic heartburn you should consult a medical professional immediately, but if it is a rare occurrence, here are a few tips you can take to alleviate your heartburn during pregnancy.

You should remember the following:

*Intake of food should be done in small portions, rather than indulging in large meals.

*Alcohol and drinks containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and cola should be avoided.

*One should not lie down immediately after a meal.

*While sleeping, the bed should be in a tilted position, with the head raised high.

*Simple antacids like magnesium trisilicate can be taken, as they are not considered harmful.

Heartburn Relief Tips During Pregnancy:

Eat meals several times in small quantities throughout the day. You must thoroughly chew everything you eat

Don't eat close to bedtime. Spare two to three hours to digest before you lie down

Take care about your dressing too. Wear lose, comfortable clothing. Especially avoid clothing that is tight around your waist and tummy

Lean at the knees instead of at the waist

Avoid food and beverages that upset your gastrointestinal system. For instance, fried or fatty foods, chocolate, acidic citrus fruits and juices and soft-drinks too.

Eat some yogurt, or drink milk- both are helpful in neutralizing stomach acid and they are good for you. Be sure to eat smaller meals more frequently- you are less likely to suffer heartburn with less food in your stomach. Be sure to avoid foods that are particularly greasy, spicy, or are known to produce gastric acid, like tomatoes and peppers. Also avoid foods like peppermint, garlic and chocolate, as these have been known to relax the cardiac sphincter, thereby causing heartburn in pregnancy.

If in your own case you never experience heartburn before pregnancy there is a chance that you will get heartburn during pregnancy. Finally, eating papaya and pineapple is good for your stomach. This fruits contains some of the same type of enzymes used by your stomach. So by adding them to your meal,it will aids your stomach helping with digestion.
