Fog rain and wild animals all make driving risky. Specially after dark when we do not have the advantage of the brightest light we know, our star the sun, working for us. At such a time the quality of the car headlights are tested time and again. Of course if you will see the modern headlights you will be amazed at the amount of light they produce and in fact they are almost able to turn night into day.

But still the risk of accidents is significantly more at night as the statistics continue to show. And the car industry continues to work tirelessly to make night vision better for car drivers. For one thing just having enormous amounts of light is not enough. The light has also got to reach the right points on the road to make the drive truly safer. For this sometime ago came the new reflectors which did not make a simple beam going straight into the distance, instead they sculpted a beam so that different parts of the road received different amounts of light.

And the innovations have not stopped there. You will also now find there are adaptive lights which turn when you turn the direction of your steering wheel. When you are taking a turn you do not need great vision in a straight line ahead of your car, you need it in the curve that your car is making. And Volvo has come up with these adaptive lights that are able to do that.

Other car manufacturers like Ford are coming up with even more advanced innovations. An example is digital beams that can be dynamically controlled based on driving conditions or driver preferences. This does away with the need to mechanically adjust the direction of the light.

Even new light sources are being tried for special uses. For example ultra violet light is being tried for better visibility of signs and road markings during wet conditions.
