A car has been such a well accepted product by masses world wide that one can rightly think it must meet all their expectations and give them great value for money. Such has been the impact of cars on modern human societies that if you go to see a movie it will quite likely start with a shot a car moving down the road. And car manufacturers are busy making better cars by improving the individual components. But given the fact that cars have been such a successful product for such a long time now one may wonder if the improvements being made are of a serious nature which improve its performance or they are more cosmetic changes meant to improve the emotional appeal of the product.

Take for example the headlights of a car. Even a long time ago for us now, say in the fifties they had powerful lamps and when we would stare into them our eyes would get dazzled and it seems it is the same today and we may therefore feel that not much has changed. But if you will do an experiment and drive a modern car fitted with headlights of a really old car you will find driving it as fast as you do with its usual headlights is not quite easy. That is because even though the old headlights will disperse the darkness the throw of the beam will not be good enough to drive the car at a high speed confidently. And the throw will not be good enough because even though the beam is powerful enough to dazzle your eyes it is not quite as bright as the modern headlights. Another reason would be that the beam is not thrown on to the road with much care and a lot of the light gets wasted in lighting up areas where you don't need as much light. Whereas the modern headlights throw the beam very judiciously and light up the key areas of the oncoming road better.
