When something new arrives we are fascinated by the quality of its performance and since we have not much to measure it against we do not think much about the quantity of its output. But with time after the initial honeymoon period is over competition will arrive and soon the quantity of the output will become a factor based on which decisions are made.

So when headlights first appeared on the scene the very fact that there was a lot of light for the driver to see with at night was enough. It did not matter if the light from one headlight manufacturer was less than that from another because both were giving more than enough light. But as cars got better and faster the headlight beam had to reach far ahead so that the driver of the car would have enough time to react. And the situation now is that less than adequate light is not passable because it makes driving at night seriously risky. Human reflex time has remained the same as cars have got faster. So now we need to be able to see much further ahead to have the same amount of time to react. We also need to be able to see more to the sides as we are driving in case something appears out of nowhere straight into the path of our car.

On the other hand cars cannot carry huge lights because the drivers of the oncoming cars would get blinded. So what they need to do is have as much more lighting power as they can and then to use it more judiciously. The light from the light source should not be wasted by lighting up the sky but more of it should hit the road. And this is done by the modern reflectors. And it is for this reason that you should check out aftermarket headlights if your car is a few years old. You will be amazed at how well the new headlights such as HID headlights light up the road.
