Have you been brainwashed by the "common wisdom" about how to find a job? - By: Paul Bowley

I recently received an email from someone in trouble. It was from Todd, an assistant manager in a large retail operation. Todd said he was seriously looking for a job. He wanted the skinny on this "alternative job search" approach.

In further communication with him I learned that he was very frustrated with his job search efforts to date. Turns out he was conducting a classic traditional approach. He wrote a resume, posted it on some job sites like Monster and HotJobs. He also told me he had answered a bunch of want ads and visited a couple employment agencies. He also sent his resume directly to dozens of other retailers in his area.

It had taken him weeks to accomplish this much. Yet he had nothing to show for all his efforts except a few TNT (thanks but no thanks) letters. And a lot of discouragement and frustration. He wanted to know what we could do to help him.

I felt bad for Todd because he had been brainwashed by the "common wisdom" about how to find a job: write a resume . . . get it out to as many resources as possible . . . and wait for the phone to ring. If it doesn't then you repeat the process till it does.

Back in the day this approach worked fine. We were very confident of getting our customers good job opportunities in a short time using these mass mailing strategies. But all that's changed now. And those old-fashioned methods just don't work anymore . . . not, at least, if you're looking to make a move quickly and be in a position to select your next job rather than settle for it.
