Harmful Effects of Rapid Weight Loss - By: Abdullah Salim

No doubt weight loss increases a person’s self confidence and helps them feel and look better. However, losing weight too quickly can have various negative effects. Although everyone trying to lose weight wants to do so rapidly, this can do more harm than good. Moreover, rapid weight loss results are often only temporary.

Rapid Weight Loss: Negative Effects
Here are some of the side effects of rapid or sudden weight loss.

• Muscle Loss: When you start to cut calories to achieve rapid weight loss, the body goes into ketosis. When the body does not get the required calories, the body begins to burn muscle to get the required energy. This also slows down your metabolic rate. Also, the body does not consider fat as an effective source of energy, so it keeps storing it for later use. While trying to lose weight quickly, you are not actually losing body fat, instead your body is storing it! This leads to more muscle being burnt by the body for generating energy, resulting in muscle loss.

• Hair Loss: Rapid weight loss often leads to hair loss. This is because most of the rapid weight loss programs recommend a low calorie or liquid diet. Both of these are generally low in proteins. Protein is required by the body for the proper growth of hair. In rapid weight loss, as the metabolic rate slows down, the absorption of protein from food also falls. With low protein levels in the body, hair eventually becomes brittle and breaks.

• Loose Skin: Rapid weight loss leads to loose skin. Though skin is elastic in nature, it will still need some time to adapt to the changes in the dimensions of the body. What happens in rapid weight loss is that the skin does not get enough time to adjust to the rapid shrinking of the body parts, thus resulting in sagging skin. This loose skin is usually visible in the thighs, arms and around the abdomen.

If you wish to lose weight in a healthy manner, rapid weight loss programs is definitely not the answer. What you need is a structured weight loss regimen along with a proper diet and exercises.
