According to the Daily Mail, research has shown that people who work for themselves are generally happier than those who work for others. The hours may be long and perhaps the pay is not so good, but the perks include independence, flexibility and increased job satisfaction.

So why is it that the self-employed who usually work much longer hours than the normal 9-5s, enjoy their working lives so much more than their waged counterparts? Well perhaps the word 'enjoy' should be used a bit more loosely. Many feel that they have to work harder and longer to earn enough money to secure their future and it is certainly true that they continue to work past retirement age if their businesses are successful where the money earned is potentially more than drawing a pension. Continuing to work rather than retiring also seems to have little to do with health, family and gender. The argument is: 'why stop whilst there's a good thing going?' There are also figures to suggest that the younger self-employed are more dynamic and prepared to take risks than their older, more established counterparts.

Based on these findings from research carried out by the University of Durham and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the article suggests that the Government should create schemes and increase benefits to encourage this penchant for self-employment where around 1 in 10 people now in the UK are self-employed and who in turn employ as many people.

Although self-employment may be the answer for many of us, comments from the article suggested that working long hours with no paid holidays and no regular income was the reality of working for yourself.
