Hangover – Causes, Symptoms and Cure - By: jasminesmith

Hangovers are caused by a variety of factors including the direct effect of alcohol on the systems of the body as well as other factors associated with drinking behavior. Although the direct effect of excessive alcohol consumption on the body produce the most unpleasantness, other symptoms can result from the withdrawal of alcohol from the body, the effects of metabolites produced when alcohol is consumed, other chemicals in alcoholic beverages, behaviors associated with drinking, and personal characteristics of the drinker.

Physical symptoms such as a pounding headache, queasy stomach, dry throat, redness of the eyes, thirst and fatigue are characteristic of a hangover. In addition, you may also experience a rapid heartbeat, tremors, muscle aches and sweating. Mental symptoms such as dizziness, depression, irritability and anxiety are also common.

Alcohol works as a diuretic, and that of course is why drinking and frequent bathroom visits are synonymous. As the body loses valuable water and becomes dehydrated, the mouth becomes increasingly dry, the muscles become weak, and the stomach becomes upset. The body becomes dehydrated, and the head begins to throb, hence the feeling of the painfully heavy brick.

Nausea is often a characteristic of a hangover and is caused by the alcohol's effect on the stomach lining. Because of the increased NADH production during metabolism of ethanol, excess NADH can build up and slow down gluconeogenesis in the liver, thus causing hypoglycemia, also called low blood sugar, which occurs when your blood glucose or blood sugar level drops too low to provide enough energy for your body's activities.

Some of the other effects of hangover appear to be caused by a condition known as metabolic acidosis. Acidosis is when your blood becomes more acidic than it should be. There are a number of reasons why alcohol causes this, but suffice it to say that alcohol interferes with the normal metabolism of some acids, and actually produces others. The end result is a slight increase in the acidity of your blood.

Hangover is a combined attack of the repulsive physical effects after the heavy consumption of the alcohol. Although there is no precise definition for the hangover, alcoholics will suffer it when they have hangover. The socio-economic impact of the alcohol hangovers is very significant. In general alcohol hangover involves any of the following symptoms are headache, poor sense of overall well-being, sensitivity to light and sound, diarrhea, loss of appetite, trembling, nausea, fatigue, increased heart rate and blood pressure, dehydration (dry mouth, extreme thirst, dry eyes), trouble in concentrating, anxiety, difficulty in sleeping and weakness.]

Sleep. Rest is your best friend at this point to give your body a recover. It is best to stay in bed so call in to work if you have to, tell them you have the stomach flu. You will sound so horrible on the phone they may believe you (unless they saw you at the bar, not a good idea then).

The only sure way to prevent a hangover is to avoid drinking. While you may not be able to totally prevent a hangover, drinking a lot of water or other rehydrating drink will go a long way toward preventing or lessening most hangover symptoms.
