Halloween Parties - A Planning Guide - By: JCl

Any parent who grew up before the 90's cannot be anything but amazed at the quality and quantity of Halloween party accessories and costumes. The event has grown out of all recognition. This is not a bad thing, in fact it is a fantastic opportunity to decorate your home and inject some life into the long dreary Winter evenings.

There is no mystery about how to organize a Halloween party. It is all about planning and preparing well in advance. Having said that there is no harm getting yourself ready by reading articles such as this to help ensure you do not forget anything. As with any other party, there will be certain things that you will have to do, such as send invitations, but at Halloween you may need to make some specific amendments to your party plan.

The first thing that should be on everyone's mind is safety. Fireworks are becoming a big part of Halloween celebrations and people are buying "home" firework kits. Do not buy fireworks from the side of the road. You need to be sure that they have been manufactured by a reputable supplier and sold with all the relevant safety marks. Don't go for the cheapest option.

It is not only fireworks that you need to be careful of. Because it will be dark , children will need to be supervised closely. A major part of the fun at Halloween is going door to door collecting sweets and treats. In busy urban areas there is always a danger from cars and trucks so make sure all young children are accompanied by an adequate number of adults.

Hosting a Halloween party is not necessarily something you have to do on your own. Why not host a joint party with friends and neighbors. You will still need to take the lead and ensure everything is in place but you can save yourself a great deal of work by asking people to look after small elements of the party, such as the deserts or the treat bags.

Set a budget. Knowing exactly what you have to spend will help focus your efforts. Because there is such an array of quality Halloween decorations and accessories available it can be very difficult to stop adding to your shopping cart. One way of avoiding this problem is to set a budget and stick to it.

Invitations are very easy to overlook but they are essential if you want everything to go well. Texts, Facebook and e-mail are all great ways to keep in contact but there they are no substitute for a hand written party invitation. All the instructions should be written in legible block letters with particular attention paid to the start and finishing times as well as the theme. For example you may want to host a "ghost party" from 4pm -8pm, if that is the case make sure it is clearly stated on the invitation and followed up with a phone call just to make sure.

Always plan for the unexpected. Remember Halloween is in the middle of Winter so assuming that you can play outdoor games may not be the wisest of plans. Our advice is to plan more games and activities than you think you will require and if possible have additional adult help on hand.

Halloween is an occasion for both children and adults. All the family can enjoy the celebration. For those who are comfortable making decorations and home baking it is a perfect opportunity to involve the children. In the week before the party you can have great fun together decorating and baking. There are plenty of free resources available online such as templates and recipes. So block out some space in your diary for some family fun.

Schools are always short of funds and arrange fundraising events throughout the year. Why not use Halloween as an excuse to stage an event for children, and parents. Ghost trains, fortune telling and apple bobbing are just a few of the games that can be included.

Halloween is one of the best times of year to entertain friends and family. It is a celebration that both children and adults can enjoy together and when planned well in advance can be a great success. It goes without saying that dressing up is an essential part of Halloween but make sure you clearly state the dress code on the invitations.
