Hair Straightners a Buyers Guide - By: S.Roberts

What do these all have in common? They are all known brands of hair straighteners.

There are three main different types of irons used to style hair. Hair straighteners, the focus of this article, are modern flat irons used to straighten the hair. Curling irons, or curling tongs, are used to create curls in the hair. These curling irons come in a variety of diameter sizes; smaller sizes create spiral curls while larger sizes give the hair shape and volume. Crimping irons, or crimpers, create the same appearance hair takes after small plaits have been take out just as quickly as actual braiding.

Having straight hair is not a new fashion, women have been striving to straighten their hair for many years. In 1882, Samuella Young used heated rods to straighten or style hair, and Adam Frisby (c. 1852-1936) is credited with creating the curling iron years later, in 1890.

Hair straighteners are irons that use heat generated from an electrical plug socket to straighten hair. Hair has hydrogen bonds which is what causes hair to become curly, and the hair straighteners break these bonds so that the hair can no longer hold its original form. However, the hydrogen bonds can reform if they are exposed to moisture, which explains why the hair is likely to revert back to its original form during rainy and damp weathers. Modern hair straighteners are made using ceramic heating elements, which makes them more effective due to their constant heat and a heat-up time of less than around 10 seconds. The better plates have very hard ceramic coatings that are sprayed in layers and baked for the best performance and to straighten hair more easily and they can cause less damage. Less expensive hair straighteners that do not have the ceramic heating elements yet they may be painted to look like they do, however they can cause more damage to the hair and their cheap coating easily wears off.

When straightening hair, it is best if the hair is dried as much as possible before the irons are used as if not the hair is likely to be burned. Hair can be dried using a hair-dry blower or with a towel. It is advised to straighten only 1-inch sections of hair at a time, and to glide the iron down the hair slowly; this will avoid having to go over the same section again. While straightening hair, although it is the pressure of the plates and the heat from the plates that straightens the hair it is advised to not clamp the plates too tightly, as this may damage the hair.

As mentioned before, hair straigheners use heat to straighten hair, and this heat can damage the hair a lot, especially if the irons are used often. Straightening dyed hair can also result in damage to the hair. It is also ideal to use a mild shampoo and strong conditioner in order to protect the hair. Unfortunately for some people, hair cannot be straightened permanently if they swim in chlorine water often, if their hair has been permanently coloured or if they have fine blonde hair.
