HID headlights - for brighter road ahead - By: Louie Liu

All vehicles have headlights which have to be compulsorily used at night or when there is fog, or rain, or overcast sky. They are an important safety feature. They help the driver to see the oncoming traffic and other happenings on the road ahead of him. It enables him to take whatever timely action is demanded by the situation on the road.

Over the years the automobiles have undergone many changes. For one, their speed has increased and the vehicles now move much faster. Consequently the driver has less time at his disposal to take whatever remedial action is demanded by the condition of traffic. To offset that, he should be able to see clearly up to a longer distance on the road for which brighter headlights are needed. Fortunately, now we have brighter sources of lights for headlights. Earlier only incandescent lamps with filaments were used in headlights but now we have halogen lamps, LED lights, and HID lights to be used as sources of light. Halogen lights have filaments but the other two do not have them. Of these HID lights give maximum amount of illumination for the same consumption of power. They are longer lasting than halogen lamps. HID in HID headlights stands for High Intensity Discharge.

Brighter lights are more useful for the driver, but they may blind the driver of the vehicle coming from the opposite side. To avoid that either the headlights have to be properly located or dimmers have to be used. To cast the beam of headlights in the right direction on the road there are reflectors and lenses in the headlight assembly. These can be adjusted by the driver to cast the beam in the right direction. The same lenses and reflectors would not work for HID lights as are being used for filament lamps. Therefore installing HID lamps in headlights meant for filament bulbs is not only improper but illegal as well. The HID headlights are now designed in a number of innovative styles to serve as decorative features. Since it is easy to install them you can at any time replace existing headlights by such headlights to give a new feel to your car.
