HEPA Pet Air Purifier-Their Effectiveness Explained - By: Debbie Davis

The term HEPA is often used but often misunderstood. Here is information about what they are and why they are so well suited as pet air purifiers.

HEPA is an acronym for high efficiency particle arresting. The first letters of each of those words are used to refer to this type of filtration, and keep one from having to say those 4 long words again and again when talking about it.

In order to be designated as such, this type of filter must be able to remove 99.97% of airborne particulates down to.3 microns in size. A micron is a length of measurement that is one millionth of a meter. It is far smaller than even the period at the end of this sentence.

What this removal rate means for the end user is that for every 10,000 airborne particles, it can and will remove 99,997 of them. Hence its designation has being highly efficient.

Because it can remove such small particles it is perfect for clearing the air of pollutants that pets produce, mainly hair, dander, dust, and feathers. Except for dander most of the other pollutants are comparatively large in terms of microns.

Pet dander on the other hand is microscopic, but it one of the biggest allergens associated with owning a warm blooded pet. Yet it is still bigger than.3 microns so it is easily removed from the air.

Literally, keeping the dander count down, makes a huge difference in keeping the air clean and fresh. For allergy sufferers this type of filter can mean the difference between being able to have a pet or not.

But a HEPA does not discriminate with the particles it removes. Even though it is great for those with pets, it also eliminates more normal household pollutants such as dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, and seasonal pollen. It can even remove airborne bacteria and viruses, which is a huge plus when filtering the air.

If you own a pet, you can never get rid of every last single particle they produce. But you can make it better by using an air cleaner with type of filter. So whether you love dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, bunnies, or any other warm-blooded pet, this type of filtration will do a great job at keeping the air relatively free of particulates.
