HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS - MAKING YOUR OWN - By: JCl

Halloween is a festival that dates back thousands of years and has it's origins in Celtic countries such as Ireland and France. It was a celebration that marked the beginning of a New Year. The equivalent of a modern day 31st December. Today it is all about dressing up in scary costumes and collecting sweets and treats. Decorating your home or party venue can also be great fun and in this article we will give tips and hints on how to involve your child in making Halloween decorations.

Before we get started, it must be stressed that making Halloween decorations, costumes and accessories is not for everyone. If you do not enjoy using your creative talents then don't do it. It will only result in stress and arguments, you are much better off visiting an online shop, such as party-shop.ie that sells Halloween party supplies and getting everything delivered direct to your door. The selection is fantastic and you will save both time and money.

When it comes to making Halloween decorations or indeed decorations for any occasion preparation is vital. The last thing you want is to be scrambling around looking for the craft supplies as the children get restless. You can be sure you will use items such as glue, coloured card, paint, markers and safety scissors so make sure you have the basic equipment ready to go.

Once you have selected a Halloween party theme, for example scary spiders, you can then start thinking about specific designs. This is where the internet comes in handy. Just do a quick search for Halloween templates and you will get a huge selection of designs including spiders, bats and ghosts. It should take no more than half an hour.

One last point you should decide before committing to making the decorations is to decide whether the decorations are to be used indoors or outdoors. If they are going to be used outdoors then you will need to ensure they are weather proof, unless of course you only intend to use them on Halloween night itself and if it is raining you can just keep them indoors.

Now to some actual suggestions. The one we most enjoy and seems to be very popular is pumpkin decorating / carving. If your children are young then carving a face on the pumpkin is definitely not a good idea but there are plenty of other options. Drawing a design on the pumpkin is just as enjoyable as well as been an activity that even toddlers can participate in.

Before decorating the pumpkin make sure you select one that is nice and smooth. It will help when trying to draw a design on it. Don't forget to cut the top off and scrape out the inside. When cleaning out the pumpkin leave about 1/2" on the inside. You will need the pumpkin to remain rigid.

If you have a few spare moments it is worth the effort of applying a base coat to the pumpkin. Orange is the perfect colour. This will make any design really stand out and it will also last longer. It is by no means essential but it will help ensure a good final result.

After doing all the prep it is time to get down to the business of tracing the design and colouring it in. Don't go for a complicated drawing, keep it nice and simple and once the outline is complete the kids can start using their imagination and colouring it whatever way they like.

The second activity we recommend is candle decorating. For this you will need nice thick pillar candles that have plenty of space for tracing a design. The process is very similar to decorating a pumpkin in that all you have to do is trace your chosen design onto the candle and let the children colour between the lines.

They key to making your own Halloween party supplies is planning. The younger your children the more prep work you will have to do. You may even have to go as far as tracing the template outline onto the particular object you want to decorate and just let them colour between the lines. Whatever you decide it should be fun. If you or the kids look upon the activity as a chore then it is not worth doing.

If you are not interested in arts and crafts then you will not be short of alternatives. Scene setters, pinatas, and costumes are just some of the Halloween party supplies that can be easily sourced online. Even if you go down the shop bought route don't assume that the decorations will magically jump out of the box. You will still need time to get the most from them and make sure you have the scariest house in the neighborhood.
