When you are practicing your guitar, it's likely that you make mistakes that you don't completely realize. You would be able to point out such mistakes if hearing someone else play, but while you are playing your ear might not be as critical, since you are concentrating on what you are currently practicing.

One secret is to record your practice time so that you can listen to what you have just played. You do not literally have to record every practice and the entire session, but make sure that every once in a while you do this so that you can catch your mistakes.

There are a few pretty simple ways of recording your guitar playing. These don't have to be professional quality by any means.

Plug your guitar into your computer's microphone or line in jack. Most computers will have these available so you can get a recording.

You will need to get a converter to go from 1/4th inch to 1/8th inch to make it all work, but this is an easy way of recording your playing. Most computers will have a simple sound utility like a sound recorder. If you don't have one, download Audacity since it's free and will work fine for this purpose.

Use your computer microphone. Another simple way is to use your computer microphone. It's not going to sound great, but you will be able to get reasonable sound out of it listening to the recording. Just play through your amp in the same room as the microphone.

Listen carefully for changes in rhythm while playing. At times you might speed up or slow down on parts that are easier or harder.

Listen to make sure that you aren't striking any notes that aren't crisp and clear. If you notice this, work on that specific technique.
