The first thing to be considered is, of course, the size of the letter itself. Each size envelope is designated as C4 thru 6, with the corresponding paper size being designated A. Thus C5 envelopes are meant to hold A5 paper. Both the envelope and the paper also come in a fourth size, designated DL, which is "compliment slip size," that is, to write notes for which the normal size would be too large.

There are many other envelope sizes, some of them designated by letter and number (B4, C2, undersize C5, C5+, C5++), and others by dimensions (10 × 7, 13 × 11, 9 × 4). (NOTE: These figures are in inches. Measured in centimetres they are, respectively, 3.9 × 2.8, 5.1 × 4.3, and 3.5 × 1.6.)

Envelopes are marketed in virtually every colour of the rainbow. The imaginative names of some of those colours are: cerise pink, claret (this is a form of dark red), bright gold, translucent ivy green, baby pink, Oxford blue, metallic red, green manilla, granite black, Pacific blue, ultra white, antique bronze, and smoke grey. Weights range from 100 to 150.

There are three basic envelope styles— pocket, wallet, and banker— designated according to how they fold. The pocket envelope is the one into which people typically put their letters into; it is also known as the "diamond flap" envelope, and individuals of its type vary mostly in length— shorter ones for personal letters, longer ones for business purposes. A wallet envelope has a square flap that is shorter than that of a pocket envelope.

On both kinds, the flap opens along the longer side, while a pocket envelope opens along the shorter side. In all three categories, there are items of the "peel and seal" type, having adhesive tape on the flap that can be removed so that the flap can be stuck to the envelope.

Printed envelopes may be made either lithographically or flexographically. In the latter method, special machines are used to print, fold, and construct the items all at once. And lithograph machines can churn out up to 50,000 prints in an hour. The two kinds of machines are useful for different kinds of print jobs; for instance, a flexograph machine is perfect for BREs that are printed in at most two colours.

A lithograph machine, on the other hand, is the more appropriate choice if you want a high- quality print job with more than two colours. Companies may also have commercial stationery made specially for them, which may have the company logo printed on them.
