Whether one moves into a new home or is doing some renovation to the present home, building a larger closet space is an ideal option because many people likely accommodate a bigger collection of items with every passing year. If one has an excess of items, then the time has come to build a bigger closet. This article provides simple steps and tips for building closet.

First, it has to be decided where the closet has to be located. The best place for building it is against the existing wall in the home. Some items are needed to be cleared to get a clear view of the available space. The plan can be sketched if necessary. While designing, the flow of movement in the room and the location of door has to be considered. There are various kinds of storage spaces to begin with. Some of them are hanging, walk-in and wardrobe closet. It depends on the kinds of items that are stored in the space. The interior usually consists of shelves, drawers, rods and other essential accessories. The material which is to be chosen is also very important. They are generally similar in function but vary by price and design. It is recommended to make a budget and stick to it.

When a general idea and a building plan have been made, the very next idea is to make a list of items that have to be purchased. By using the building plan, the actual space has to be measured accordingly. Provisions have to be made for the mistakes by buying longer or wider materials like shelving wood. The basic tools needed are hammer, drill, level, screwdriver, saw and tape measure. The next step is to build the frame. A stud will provide support for the space; it is usually located in the center of the wall. A stud finder can be used if necessary. The organizer has to be connected vertically to the stud as it will be more secure in that way.

Now, the frame has to be placed in its place, the level has to be checked, the ends have to be secured using frame gun. The following steps explain to drywall the closet and installing essential elements for the interior like rods and shelves. Drywall consists of adding finishing touches to the interior ceilings and walls. Lastly, if wood materials are used then they have to be painted. They will last longer in that way. Now the door and door frame can be added to the closet. Finally, the new closet space is ready.

These are the basic simple guidelines for building a closet. A lot of money can be actually saved by building one’s own storage space. It is an easy and quick process if a proper building plan is made and all the required necessary tools and equipments are in place.
