Grow Love Heart Cress for Valentines - By: S.Roberts

This might seem like unusual gift to make for your Valentine, unless they keen gardeners or have a particular love of cress. However, the Cress Love heart is the ideal gift for Valentines Day because it is symbolic of your growing love for your partner. See how fast your cress (love) grows day to day. Cress has a spicy and hot flavour just like your passion for your Valentine. But best of all, once the cress has grown you can share a cress sandwich and enjoy the fruits of your love.

The Cress love heart is very easy to make and grows very quickly. You will need to water it daily.

To make a Cress Valentines Heart you will need...

Tights or Stockings (Pine or Red if possible),
Cress seeds,
A New Bath Sponge,
Elastic Band,

First you need to shape the sponge. Draw the biggest possible love heart that you can on to the bath sponge and then cut it out through the whole thickness of the sponge. Don't worry too much if the cutting is a bit rough, this won't be noticed later.

Then cut a leg off from the tights. And cut the leg open so that it is a square of material about the same size as the sponge heart.

Now give the sponge a wetting to make it damp on the top surface so that the seeds stick to it, this make it a bit easier when adding the tights material.

Sprinkle some Cress seeds on the top surface of the heart. Make sure that all of the sponge has seeds on it. Also spread the cress seeds evenly so you don't have patchy growth.

Next put the tights material over the sponge heart over the top of the cress seed. Without turning the heart over (otherwise your seeds will drop off) gather up all the tights material up at the back of the heart. Once you have gathered up all the surplus material, start to pull the material tighter. This will open out the pattern on the tights and give the cress holes to grow through. Tightening the material also improves the shape of the sponge, so all those rough cuts that you made earlier, will magically vanish.

When you are happy with the shape of your heart, wrap an elastic band tightly around the surplus material at the back, to hold it in place. You can trim the surplus material now, but don't cut it too short, otherwise your heart will fall to bits.

Fill a dish with water and put your heart in it. It will float for a while. The dish is the reservoir of water to feed the cress. The reservoir should always contain water.

Leave the Cress heart in a sunny window to grow. After a week you should start to see the cress growing.
