A cherry picker is a work platform that is attached to hydraulic lift system. These are often seen being used to clean windows on high buildings; they were traditionally used to pick fruit in orchards. However as new cherry picker technology has been introduced their usage has greatly expanded.

Who can use Cherry Pickers?

Cherry pickers although might look very straightforward to use, you can't just decide to use one. You have to be trained to use machinery like this, as there are various issues that you must be aware of beforehand. It is actually against the law to use this type of mechanical equipment without having had the appropriate training. It is required by Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations to have had some training. When it comes to operator training the most well-known standards for accreditation, are Powered Access Federation. Therefore anyone offering a course for mechanical equipment must have been trained to these standards.

Cherry Picker Usage

As stated previously, cherry pickers were first used in fruit orchards; they are still widely used for the purpose of picking fruit. They therefore make the task so much easier for the fruit picker, thus saving time and enabling the picker to access as many fruit as possible. Industrial window cleaners sometimes use cherry pickers to reach high windows; again they must be trained to use this equipment before using it.

Some Fire engines use cherry pickers, however they are slightly different, and are used instead of a ladder, to rescue people faster and more efficiently. Cherry pickers are actually slightly safer to use than ladders, as the person that is being rescued, does not have to climb down a ladder in a fragile state. They can just climb on to the platform and be lowered down to safety.

Cherry pickers are used a lot on buildings sites, and this is where they can be the most dangerous to use. Therefore people who using this type of equipment on building sites, should have been trained to really high standards before being allowed to use them.

Cherry Picker Safety

Cherry pickers are relatively safe to use, if you have been thoroughly trained, they are dangerous for someone who is completely untrained. To use a cherry picker, the user must always wear a helmet and protective clothing for obvious safety reasons. They are equipped with safety harnesses as well, and all cherry pickers have to meet rigorous safety standards before they can be used. They must also be regularly service checked, especially if they are being used on a building site on a daily basis, for long periods of time.
