Green Living: Why do people recycle their mobile phones? - By: Felicity Lightbody

A growing trend is becoming more and more apparent in American culture. Slowly but surely, we are becoming an incredibly green nation. As you might well be aware, this is one of the most progressive and helpful movements that the United States has seen in decades. By simple acts of recycling and reducing harmful energy production, we are not only securing a healthy future for our young, but also making the life we live day to day a little easier. A fantastic new niche in recycling has occurred, and it has to do with an item that most of us use every single day. Those items are mobile phones. We live, now more than ever in a consumerist and slightly vain society. Most people couldn't even imagine life without their mobile phones, and probably have a few "out-dated" ones laying around, collecting dust. Or, even worse, they've just been thrown away. But is this really such a bad thing? This article will highlight why people recycle their mobile phones, and why it is good for the environment.

Mobile phones and other mobile devices are commonly linked with toxic chemicals. From the battery, to the display, to even the computerized circuits inside of the device, they typically require chemicals that are extremely harmful to the environment to function properly. However, it's not just the environment that feels the pain of cellular and mobile phone toxicity, as they can also affect humans and animals. Mobile phones and other mobile devices contain hazardous substances which have colloquially become known as PBTs. PBTs is an acronym meaning Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic Chemicals. The truly disillusioning part about these particular chemicals is that they not only are known to cause damage to human nervous systems, reproductive organs, and development, they also have been shown to cause cancer.

Through the truly inspiring grass-roots organizations that have been arising in the past few years, mobile phones impact on the environment has been greatly reduced, which in turn greatly reduces the health risks to the neighbouring communities. Not only can disease be prevented, but often the materials in old mobile phones and other mobile devices can be reused to make other devices, which increase the quality of devices on the market today. It's usually advised not to attempt the process yourself. Contact a local company that deals with mobile phone recycling, and they will help you through it.
