They may not are generally game-changers for major Hollywood studios nonetheless they certainly had an impact on nearly every indie filmmaker on earth. I know that sounds like hyperbole but the point is that if Scarlet or the brand new Canon camera is not the main you own it will still create waves in the rest of the industry and further push the cost vs. performance envelope. It's a thrilling time to be a filmmaker and it's a thrilling time to be in movie production.

RED Epic-X

Epic-X Features are as follows: (with my comments thrown in)

RED DSMC (Digital Stills and Motion Camera)

New MYSTERIUM-X 5K sensor

5K (2: 1, 2. 4: 1, Anamorphic two: 1) at 1-120fps

several. 5k RAW (two. 4: 1) with 1-120fps

4K (04: 9, HD, 2: 1, Anamorphic two: 1) at 1-150fps (more than is currently available in the red One at 2k)

3K (16: 9, 2: 1, Anamorphic 2: 1) at 1-200fps

2K (06: 9, 2: 1, Anamorphic two: 1) at 1-300fps (hopefully it's going to be a sharper 2k than relating to the RED One which is not great.)

1080P (16: 9) (one of the most exciting ones for me given so much documentary type shooting could be easily handled with a pristine 1080p master)

720P (16: 9)

Increased Dynamic Range - 13. 5 Halts, but ability to do 18 stops

Time Lapse, Frame Ramping (probably just a better version of what's over the RED One)

REDCODE 12 and 16-bit RAW (Awesome for many things but that's lots of data, I will stick for a lower number most of the time)

ISO 200-8000 (I would love to see some relatively thoroughly clean stuff at 2000 at least)

Completely Modular Process, each Module individually upgradeable

Independent Stills and Motion Settings (both record full resolution REDCODE RAW)

5 Axis Flexible Sensor Plate (looks cool but I'm undecided how hard it's going to be to simply set again focus.)

Multiple Recording Media Options (Compact Flash, RED MAG SSD, CRIMSON Drives, RED RAM) They can be supposedly having 2 compact flash slots which is very useful and finally catching up with the times.

Wireless REDMOTE control (A decent idea and something that should've been around long ago.)

Touchscreen LCD regulate option (cool but not indispensable)

Bomb-EVF, RED-EVF and RED-LCD compatible (My organization is VERY happy about that one)

Multiple User Control Buttons

LDS and /i Data enabled PL Mount (A Requirement more than a development)

Monitor Ports help both LCD and EVF (YAY 2 LCD's each time)

720P, 1080P together with 2K monitoring support

Gigagbit Multi-level interface and 802. 11 Wireless interface (Finally my iPhone won't have more power than my 30k camera.)

3 Axis intrinsic motion sensor, built with GPS receiver (Really slick, oh the possibilities)
