Great Reasons to Go Walking in Crete - By: Tony Maniscalco

Why is it worth taking a holiday that involves walking in Crete? Really, the question boils down into two entirely different subjects:

• What is special about Crete?

• What is special about a holiday involving walking in Crete?

Let's deal with these one at a time.

Why is Crete special?

Had you been there, you would know! Crete is one of those rare holiday destinations that manages to combine stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, superb culture, amazingly friendly people and ancient history, all in one package.

It is not a particularly large island but it has been at the crossroads of the eastern Mediterranean for 4000 plus years, and many great civilisations (including Europe's very first civilisation, the Minoan) have left their marks all over the island. These are visible not only in ruins and places such as Knossos and Hagia Triada, but also in the architecture, cuisine and local culture.

But it is not all highbrow stuff. Crete has some great beaches and stretches of coastline that are ideal for those who love spending time in the sun and in the sea. It has resorts that range from those that are relatively undeveloped and typically much-loved by families that enjoy tranquillity and getting away from it all, right up to sophisticated and bustling centres that are frequented by those that enjoy a rather more dynamic annual holiday!

Why walking in Crete?

If you have ever sat in a coach with everybody sitting with their cameras poised, hoping to be able to catch a snap of something as it passes by the window at 75 mph, then you may already know the answer to this question! Sometimes to really see and experience a country, it is necessary to take your time and to use good old-fashioned foot-power. Guided tours are available, as part of walking in Crete holidays, that will ensure you will be able to see some of the key sites (and sights) exactly as they were meant to be seen - at leisure and on foot.

For example, if you are standing on Europe's first ever road in the middle of the ruins of Knossos, then exploring it, and the surrounding area, is much more evocative when you know you are walking the same paths and smelling the same smells as those that went before you thousands of years ago.

Alternatively, if you are exploring the mountain regions, then walking along a path that may be totally inaccessible by car, will allow you to see and experience things that would otherwise be impossible.

Walking around in Crete can be even more enjoyable if you are walking to pre-defined itineraries and under the guidance of an expert tour leader. Not only will you be able to be sure that you won't miss anything, but you also won't run the risk of getting lost. So, if you would like a different and unique holiday, then walking in Crete may be for you.
