Government Air Purifiers – Which Do They Recommend? - By: Allison Mac

Air purifiers are a necessary addition to our homes these days. According to the EPA, the air inside our homes may be five times more polluted than the outdoor air. Much of our time is spent inside our homes so it would be nice to be breathing clean, healthy air free of dust, mold, mildew and other toxic pollutants.

The U.S. Government has certain recommendations when it comes to air purifiers:

U.S. Centers of Disease Control (CDC) recommends air purifier with both HEPA Filter and UV Light. The CDC also recommends UV lights in homeless shelters to prevent the spread of disease, particularly TB (tuberculosis).

Dept. of Homeland Security recommends HEPA air filters, along with a pre-filter to preserve the life of the HEPA filter. HEPA air filters were originally developed by the Atomic Energy Commission during the Second World War. They were designed to remove radio active dust from their plants.

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture found negative ions (ionizers) to be highly effective against dust and bacteria in recent studies.

U.S. Department of Energy found that photocatalytic oxidation air purification destroyed VOC chemicals at a significant rate, even at high air flow rates.

Indoor air pollutants can be extremely harmful and may be an aggravating factor in allergies, illnesses, headaches, fatigue, restless sleep, etc. Knowing this, most of the U.S. Government facilities are required to have air filters. It only makes since to have them in our homes as well and possibly even in our vehicles. The US Government is big on HEPA air filters and they have been proven to be highly effective.

By shopping online we can compare the features and benefits of different air purifiers. It would be smart to keep in mind the government recommendations when comparing machines. Also watch for price, effectiveness, noise level, annual cost (filter replacement costs and energy bills), ease of use, warranty as well as size.
