Goose Calls: Luring Geese Has Never Been Easier - By: Charlie Z Jones

Goose hunting is an outdoor sporting activity that quite a few people enjoy for recreation. Hunting has never been an easy task. In the past, it was needed for survival. Hunting for food was born out of instinct and the need to survive.

Nowadays, it is considered a sport. Very few actually hunt in order to get food. Markets already sell meat and that does make things a lot easier. Still, there are those who enjoy hunting for the fun, challenge and thrill it brings. However, not just anyone can hunt. Permits and certifications are needed for legal hunting.

Luring one’s prey

Geese are probably just as smart as other wild animals. They will fly away if they feel threatened and will not land in an area that looks unusual to them. Tricking them is not easy. In order to do so, one needs goose calls, decoys and hunting blinds.

A goose call is a wind instrument used to reproduce the same sound a particular breed of goose makes. If a hunter fails to mimic the sound properly, geese will just ignore it. This is also true for ducks. Mallards will only respond to what sounds like another mallard.

Before making game calls, hunters should have the decoy set. Furthermore, hunters should be totally covered by hunting blinds. As mentioned above, geese will not land if it sees a hunter aiming at it. This is also the reason why some hunters prefer to use blinds made of natural vegetation, big branches and lumber.

Once all of that is accomplished, geese will land within firing range. At that point, it is a lot easier to shoot it.

Hunting grounds and seasons

Geese hunting season usually starts during fall and ends early winter. This is roughly the time these migratory birds fly to places with warmer climate. As an exception, March and April are months for snow geese hunting. At times, the snow geese population grows too large that it risks destroying their habitat. Hunting is a form of population control.

Public hunting grounds will also have rules. Sportsmanship acts like picking up dead or injured birds is not required by law, but it is done out of common courtesy. Some hunters choose to have dogs for the sole purpose of retrieving those.
