The iPhone has become the most popular smartphone of all time, and one of the reasons is the Youtube app. Everyone who saw it couldnt help but be amazed at watching the Youtube library in the palm of their hands. But now that very app is leaving Apple users behind everyone else.

YouTube who are owned by Google, have now revealed an improved and updated mobile phone YouTube site, m.youtube.com which is better than anything else that is out there including the iPhone app. The new mobile Youtube is not only running in HTML5 but includes a better, more efficient interface that is quick, has like/unlike flags and playlists, streams better quality video over 3G, and includes suggested searches for a better viewer experience.
Previously accessing the youtube site straight from iPhone was a no go as it was based on Flash which Apple do not support.
So why is it that Google are releasing the new improved, all singing and dancing Youtube, but not updating the Apple version? Well it didnt help when Apple banned Google Voice from the App Store. Google Voice is a great free call-forwarding service that has been blocked by the App Store. Not only was the app barred from entering, but third-party apps that tied into the service were kicked out. However Google then released a web version that offers most of the functionality you’d expect from an onboard app. And Apple cannot prevent customers from accessing this one.
It looks like Google have one eye on the new Android operating system and are seeing Apple as an enemy rather than an friend. It is doubtful that Google will release any new iPhone apps, or even update existing ones thereby allowing Android dominate the market. Although iPhone users can access the new site it bypasses Apples store which will not amuse the company. Apple’s decision to control everything that enters the app store to its own advantage seems to be backfiring bigtime.

Remember When YouTube only had 360p and 480p Videos? well then they took it to the next level with HD content and introduced 720p and 1080p, and we all thought that was that 1080p is as high a HD resolution you can get, well guess what YouTube have just introduced 4K which is four times the resolution of 1080p wait for it, 4096 x 2304 pixels and i guess keeping with 720p, 1080i and 1080p this new resolution would be something like 2304i and 2304p. 4K is over four times the size of 1080p.
Now lets have some perspective on the size of this 4K beast, the ideal screen size for a 4K video is 25 feet; IMAX movies are projected through two 2K resolution projectors.
Although this new 4K HD resolution sounds promising, how many 4K videos are available on YouTube? well as it turns out not very many, actually it semms like theres only 5 video clips listed on YouTube’s 4K Resolution playlist. To view any video in a source resolution greater than 1080p, select “Original” in the video quality pulldown menu:
Its not supprising theres not much 4K videos about as video cameras that produce the required format are very expensive and can take up as much space as a small refrigerator and require an ultra-fast broadband connection.
As Youtube seem to be going HD crazy, and they stream over a billion videos per day. Lets hope they have a lot of heavy duty servers on order.
