Caterers can make or break a lot of functions based simply on how good their food is, but in reality there is a lot more that goes into a good catering job than just what is eaten.

Good caterers certainly must be able to cook, because even the most thorough and well-prepared cooks will not be very successful if the meals they produce are not well received. At the same time, however, those that do know how to cook must also have a handle on a number of other important aspects of the job.

Because caterers are preparing food for events that will include varying numbers of guests, and because they will often be presenting these meals to the guests as well, cooking is one thing that a good caterer must stay on top of to make sure that everything goes as planned.

Of course cooking is important, but there are many facets of cooking that play a large role in successful catering. Being able to adapt menus and ingredients on the fly or to fit clients' specific needs or desires is important. Food safety also goes hand-in-hand with the cooking itself, and is an equally important aspect of catering in general. Professional caterers should be trained and well-versed in all aspects of nutritional safety and should always practice safety in preparation and in serving meals.

Because catering is essentially customer service, a good caterer should be someone who relates well with clients and is able to easily communicate with them and with guests at a function. When it comes down to designing a menu, choosing the right presentation or any of the other aspects of a caterer's job, that person will need to be helpful and diplomatic in helping clients understand their options and achieve what they hope for while also staying within established limitations.

Being detail-oriented is also the hallmark of a good caterer, because it is often the little things that can make the difference between a satisfactory meal and an extraordinary one. Whether it is fulfilling a very specific request, ensuring that each aspect of the meal and its presentation is executed perfectly or simply ensuring that every member of the staff is performing his or her duties appropriately, a good caterer should always be on the lookout to ensure everything is running smoothly.

These basic qualities and various others can help separate great caterers from those that are simply good. By ensuring that one that you hire displays these particular traits, you will be going a long way towards ensuring that your event and its meal go off exactly as you hope they will.
