Golf Thoughts - By: Chrissie Mason

Golf thoughts are what every golfer does. He or she thinks about the game whenever he or she can. They think about how to improve the game, how to improve the swing, the drive down the fairway, the putt, the golf carts... Any golfer who doesn't spend at least a little time thinking about these things is not really a golfer. They are unlikely to improve in any significant way. Golf thoughts precede positive results!

Of course, you can think yourself into golf too much. If you swing back and think about the angle of your arm, the extent of the swing back, the amount of drive you need to get the ball from A to B, the force of the swing, etc, etc, you will never get it right. Don't let golf thoughts intrude too much. Think about where the ball is, and where the ball should be. Before you tee off, think about the score you want, the score you need and deserve, and then make the shot. Most of the time you will succeed if you take this approach.

Most golfers have golf thoughts about the drive down the difficult fairway that beat all others and came in at three or four under par. It's a great thought, but it's also a dream. It's a dream that could come true, of course, but it's not a dream that you should be dreaming. Concentrate on your short game. Concentrate on the putts. Have good golf thoughts about the difficult putting shots, those shots that can be measured in single metres. Doing this will improve your game. The real skill is invariably to be found on the green. That's where your golf thoughts should be concentrated on.

Golf has been described as "an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle." It's that occasional miracle that we all strive for. That's what our thoughts are always concentrated on. Each swing or putt has the potential to be that miracle, and no matter that the last 500 were not - the next one may well be the one.

The great thing about playing golf is the fact that you could - you might - just play a fantastic game. You may just pull the necessary skills out of somewhere and pull it off. It has happened before - not often, but it has happened. Your golf thoughts will invariably drift back to these facts and tell you, "Why not?" Today it could be your turn to make the shot of the century. Why not?
