Golf Shoes Care Checklist - By: Tauqeer Hassan

- After you have purchased new shoes, remove the spikes and lubricate the threads before replacing them. This will greatly reduce the chance of the spikes becoming stuck when you need to change them.

- After every round, clean your shoes properly by wiping them with a damp cloth to remove any dirt and grass clippings. Use a nail brush to remove any impediments from around the lace eyelets and tongue and from between the sole and the upper. Grass in particular will hold moisture.

- Use a shoe tree to keep your shoe in shape, placing it in the shoe immediately after use while the shoe is still slightly damp from perspiration and water. Then it will dry in shape.

- If you've played in very wet conditions and the inside of the shoe is saturated, stuff it with newspaper so that it soaks up any excess moisture. This will put the shoe back in shape and avoid the problem of the shoe tree locking in moisture where it is in contact with the inside of the upper.

- You must never dry your shoes in front of an open fire or heater. Eventually, this will lead the leather to crack, and if the upper is glued to the sole the parts may unglue in the long run.

- Shoes with leather uppers should be polished often with a regular polish or an oil-based shoe cream as they help condition the leather. A leather conditioner should be rubbed into the soles and stitching as often as possible. Shoes with synthetic uppers would be cleaned with a light soap.

- Make sure your spikes do not wear down. Those that will wear more quickly are under the ball of your foot and to a lesser degree under the heel. Good spikes will give you a better grip.
